We decided to create this online BlackBerry Lab for the purposes of testing many situations that a end user may encounter when using their BlackBerry with our applications. Soon we will be extending our experiments to other areas that involve BlackBerry devices in general.

LAB 1 : Speeding up your BlackBerry as a modem connection.

BlackBerry used as a modem

*** We and a few others are currently testing this tip and will be posting our results soon. However, please feel free to share your feedback as well.

Using your phone as a modem isn't the same as using DSL or cable modem at home however when on the go we all like to use our phone as a modem. If you are using your BlackBerry as a modem / tethered modem and your connection seems to be a tad bit slow, see the following information below.

This tip is more or less a trick to enable your BlackBerry to run more efficient. {We suggest using the Firefox browser which you can download here }

This tip requires for the end user to disable java on their internet browser ( you can also disable javascript and web images as well -if you'd like to try this) **. This will allow using your BlackBerry as a modem the ability to receive and distribute data in a more efficient way. For example, our clients that use Shark Modem - BlackBerry as a Modem application because of the 5 connection limitation by the BlackBerry Operating System, this slow down the speed of the connection. So by disabling java it appears to speed up the connection.

How do you disable Javascript on Firefox? See the link below. (if you are using other browsers, we have listed those below as well)

Disabling Java -Firefox browser
Disabling Java - Internet Explorer browser

Note: Disabling Javascript and Web Images from loading should produce even better results.

** We know some of you may say, " If I disable java this will interrupt the end user experience." Depending on which site and if they are using alot of java, javascript or many pictures the site may not be browsable. We say, "give it a try and see the results for yourself." Some may be able to live without certain features and perhaps others may not be able to. We are still testing this and will report more shortly.

Also we must remember that they're other deciding factors that can cause the connection to be slow such as signal strength, network congestion..etc

send us your results via our email

LAB 2 : Results from Lab 1

If you remember we stated, "This tip requires for the end user to disable java on their internet browser ( you can also disable javascript and web images as well -if you'd like to try this) **. This will allow using your BlackBerry as a modem the ability to receive and distribute data in a more efficient way. For example, our clients that use Shark Modem - BlackBerry as a Modem application because of the 5 connection limitation by the BlackBerry Operating System, this slow down the speed of the connection. So by disabling java it appears to speed up the connection."

Results - We noticed that disabling these options actually helped the connection speed. It allowed us to surf the Internet longer without having to exit the Shark Modem BlackBerry application to restart the connection. We even ran a few test with disabling the photo option within the browser and it proved to be helpful. Most of the pages loaded within 5-7 seconds in comparsion to 10 seconds that it would normally take.

We are currently reseaching other methods and ideas to improve your experience. We will report back shortly.
