What kind of speed should
I expect with the use of The Shark Modem?
Expected
speed depends on various components. One item in particular
that is standard is - area coverage.
When using the Shark Modem please ensure that you're
in an area that has good coverage on your device. Another
factor depends on the type of network of your carrier.
Below we have listed the common speed discovered.
Maximum transmission speed for Nextel network is 19.2K ( it's ~ 2 Kbytes per second) and average latency of less than 3 seconds - Featured Story
Carrier Support Site "GPRS, a high speed data service that averages 50k transfer speeds, is offered by GSM carriers, and it's widely available in Europe and parts of Asia, which have been GSM areas for quite some time. It is also now widely available in the US from carriers such as AT&T,
T-Mobile and Cingular, though their GPRS coverage is
mostly in metropolitan regions. If you use a GPRS provider,
you generally pay for the amount of data you download
rather than time spent online.
CDMA2000 (also called 2.5g and 1xRTT) runs on the current
CDMA network that drives most cellular services in
the US, parts of Canada and Mexico. Verizon and Sprint
already have most all cities online and the data transfer
rates range from 50k to 70k." - Featured Story
I'm getting "Error: Unknown Error", "Bad DNS Address", or "Error: Unable to open connection" on
my BlackBerry 7520, what do I do?
There can be a delay of 1-5 days from the
time you order Nextel's BlackBerry Email and Web Plan,
to the time when full data services work on the handheld.
Further, many users have reported that the Shark Modem
applications work for the first day or two after receiving
their BlackBerry, and then stop working for a few days
until the 1-5 day period has elapsed. Please wait and
try again in a few days. You may need to perform a
hard reset of your BlackBerry, which involves removing
the battery from the handset for a minute.
NOTE: This error can occur even if your voice plan, BlackBerry email, and/or Nextel Online are already activated - they're completely separate from the data service your Shark Modem software requires.)
Use of the ESC button on the side of your handset (below the track wheel) while running a Shark Modem application also appears to trigger this condition, due to issues with the 7520 firmware. Currently, we recommend a hard reset of your BlackBerry, which involves removing the battery from the handset for a minute.
To avoid this problem from manifesting itself in the future, avoid all use of the ESC button on the side of the handset, particularly while loading Web or email content with the Shark Modem software. Pressing the trackwheel can access the Back and Stop commands.
Why do I get an "IPPP" error with my Blackberry?
This message indicates that Shark Modem could not successfully connect to a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) with Mobile Data Service (MDS). The resolution depends on whether or not you intend to connect via BES.
If you intend to connect via BES: Connections using BES/MDS require BES v3.5 or later for Microsoft Exchange, or BES v2.2 or later for Lotus Domino. Mobile Data Service must be enabled on the BES. If your BES fulfills these requirements, the issue may be that you do not have an appropriate IPPP service book entry synchronized to your handheld. The current list of service book entries can be viewed within Options). You may need to consult your system administrator for help in synchronizing an appropriate service book entry and/or isolating the connection problem further.
